About the Gospel of Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew, (Greek: «Κατὰ Ματθαῖον Εὐαγγέλιον»), is the first book of the New Testament and one of the four canonical gospels. Traditionally attributed to the apostle Matthew, a former tax collector and one of Jesus' twelve disciples, this gospel presents a detailed account of the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Written primarily for a Jewish-Christian audience, Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures.
One of the key features of Matthew's Gospel is its strong connection to Old Testament prophecy. The author frequently cites prophetic texts to demonstrate how Jesus fulfills the expectations of the Jewish tradition. The genealogy at the beginning of the gospel traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham and David, reinforcing His legitimate claim to messianic kingship.
Matthew organizes his narrative around five major discourses, the most famous being the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5–7), which contains foundational teachings such as the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and ethical instructions that emphasize inner righteousness and compassion. Throughout the gospel, Jesus is portrayed as a new Moses — a teacher and lawgiver who brings a deeper understanding of God's will.
The Gospel concludes with the Passion narrative, recounting Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection. The final chapter includes the Great Commission, in which the risen Christ commands His disciples to spread His teachings to all nations.
Overall, Matthew presents a portrait of Jesus as both the fulfillment of Jewish hopes and the universal Savior. It weaves together theological insight, moral instruction, and historical narrative, making it a foundational text for Christian belief and practice.
