About the Gospel of Mark
The Gospel of Mark, (Greek: «Κατὰ Μᾶρκον Εὐαγγέλιον»), considered the earliest of the four canonical Gospels, was likely written around 70 CE in Rome by John Mark, a companion of Peter the Apostle. It is the shortest and most fast-paced of the Gospels, offering a vivid and dramatic account of Jesus Christ’s life, deeds, death, and resurrection. Unlike the other evangelists, Mark does not include well-known parables or a genealogy of Jesus, focusing instead on action and immediacy.
Mark presents Jesus as the suffering Son of God and the Messiah who came to serve humanity. He is depicted as a miracle worker, healer, and teacher, yet he repeatedly instructs people to keep his identity secret. This theme, known as the "Messianic Secret," emphasizes that Jesus' true mission can only be fully understood through his suffering, death, and resurrection. The Gospel carries a sense of urgency, reinforcing the idea that the time of God’s kingdom is at hand.
The narrative builds toward Jesus’ crucifixion, where he is rejected, misunderstood, despised and ultimately sacrificed.
The oldest manuscripts of Mark’s Gospel end abruptly at chapter 16:8, with the women fleeing from Jesus’ empty tomb in fear. However, later copies include the so-called “long ending” (16:9–20), which describes Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances and his final instructions to his disciples.
This recording contains also that last part, 16:9-20 of Mark's Gospel.
• You can follow the Greek or English text at "Perseus".
